Kirby hoodie recalled in Japan due to spelling error

Listen, we all make mistakes, and typos are probably the most frequent of them. From texts to emails, tweets and Instagram posts, sometimes errors slip through the cracks. The thing is, those are easy enough to fix, as we can wave our magical digital wands and correct the issue in an instant. When something is in print, it becomes considerably harder.

Japanese clothing store Shimamura is finding out the hard way just how inconvenient it can be when there’s a printed spelling error, as now they’re faced with a recall of one of their products. As you can see in the image above, the company released a Kirby hoodie that says Kirby’s name on the top of the hood. Unfortunately, the version of the hoodie that released says “Karby” at the top instead of Kirby.

This is actually a tad more forgivable of a mistake than you might think at first. In Japanese, Kirby is both pronounced and written in a way that sounds closer to “Karby,” so the typo isn’t as crazy as it may seem. That said, you think someone somewhere in the chain of command would have caught this one before printing a bunch of hoodies!

Shimamura is offering customers a refund or a replacement hoodie with the correct spelling, but as you might guess, plenty of customers are hanging on to their “Karby” hoodies due to finding the mistake endearing, or believing it will become a collector’s item.
