RUMOR: Mario Club Co., Ltd. hit with layoffs (UPDATE)
Trouble brewing at Nintendo?
It’s not often we talk about layoffs within Nintendo itself, but the latest rumor indicates that a considerable amount of one subsidiary has been shown the door.
According to Japanese outlet Leakpress, Mario Club Co., Ltd. is seeing sizable layoffs, with roughly 150 of the 400-staffer strong company being let go. Nintendo has not commented publicly on these rumors, but should they make a statement, we’ll be sure to let you know.
Wondering why the subsidiary is facing layoffs? According to the report, Nintendo is swooping in to remove staffers who “cause trouble” and also “drag their colleagues down.” In other words, this isn’t a situation of Nintendo or the subsidiary being in financial trouble, but instead a case of doing some housecleaning.
Mario Club Co., Ltd. has been a subsidiary for decades now, having first worked on Dr. Mario all the way back on the NES. They’ve been involved with countless big-name games over the years, their most recent being Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD.
UPDATE: We’re happy to report that this rumor turned out to be untrue. Eurogamer contacted Nintendo for a statement on the matter, and a representative shared the following:
“We have confirmed with Mario Club Co., Ltd. that the rumored information in the report is untrue.”

7d ago150 out of 400 people were causing trouble?? Sounds like they have some serious issues if that's all true.

7d agoIf this is true, then it’s the equivalent of when Waffle House closes down.
The global job market for tech is absolutely f***ed.
When it's that much people causing trouble it could be an ideological difference between the company and those employees or maybe those people were trying to form a union.
